Dance across the borders, this Saturday

April 14th, 2010

Life-saving Glasgow advice project The Unity Centre are holding a fundraising ceilidh in Edinburgh this Saturday (17th).

Hello! Once a year the amazing Ceilidh Collective people in Edinburgh hold a brilliant party for Unity in Edinburgh. Last year it raised almost £1000 for the centre and we took twenty people through from Glasgow to join the fun….   [A ‘Ceilidh (pronounced “Kay-Lee”) is a traditional Scottish social gathering with traditional music, dancing, and storytelling.]   It’s the time of year for another Ceilidh to raise money for the Unity Centre – This year the money will go towards buying a new minibus for the Centre . This year, the Ceilidh’s going to be on   Saturday 17th April At the Steiner School, 60 Spylaw Road, Edinburgh Here’s a map: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&q=steiner+school+edinburgh&fb=1&gl=uk&hq=steiner+school&hnear=edinburgh&cid=0,0,11091512697169990379&ei=VWizS_j5DYn00gSP0dG4BA&ved=0CAgQnwIwAA&ll=55.933097,-3.222899&spn=0.011803,0.027595&z=15 £10 / £6 entrance fee and FREE for all asylum seekers   With music from the Robert Fish Band & friends with a fully licensced organic bar including snacks and juices and a chance to win a cool prize in Unity’s mega-raffle!

Get it up ye, Richard Curtis!

March 15th, 2009

Apparently last week’s fundraising gig was a massive success. Bannermans was hoaching, the walls were dripping with sweat and every single raffle ticket was sold (when has that ever happened?). A quick count says that the night raised nearly £1000 to be split between ACE and solidarity funds for the autonomous Zapatista communities of Southern Mexico (read about the clinic they built here).

Grassroots fundraising, making a difference without subjecting you to washed-comedians with expense accounts bigger than your monthly pay packet. Why not set up a Standing Order to these groups and get the warm fuzzy feeling every month:

What’s happening in Edinburgh? The ACE Quiz!

January 22nd, 2009

Friday 30 JAN 2009, doors open 6pm @ ACE, 17 W. Montgomery Place, Edinburgh

Question 1
Do you like a drink?

Question 2
Do you like curry?

Question 3
Do you think you’re clever?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the above questions then read on…

Leith’ s reluctant new entertainment hub, the Autonomous Centre of Edinburgh, 17 west Montgomery place, is hosting a quiz night to raise money.

There will be:

  • Delicious organic coconut and vegetable rice with (vegan) ‘butter’ dahl and pasta salad for eats
  • An endless amount of organic ales and wines available via a raffle at discount prices (hey we are a food coop after all)
  • A dazzling array / intriguing mix of anarchist history, general knowledge, absurd idiosyncratic “Whae the fuck would ken that!??” questions and easy ones.

Added to this an exciting music round, a film round and an ‘activist’ / protester ‘What happened next?’ round all brought to you via our luxurious high res digital projection suite with surround sound!

Deal capitalism and patriarchy a blow the easy way – from your favourite armchair in ACE, with a pint in your hand, stuffing your face with curry cooked by someone else, showing off how clever you are.
